Surgical robotics: A look-back of latest advancement and bio-inspired ways to tackle existing challenges

Yang LIU, Jing LIU

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2012, Volume 7, Issue 4,   Pages 376-384 doi: 10.1007/s11465-012-0352-1

Abstract:

This article is dedicated to present a review on existing challenges and latest developments in surgical robotics in attempts to overcome the obstacles lying behind. Rather than to perform an exhaustive evaluation, we would emphasize more on the new insight by digesting the emerging bio-inspired surgical technologies with potentials to revolutionize the field. Typical approaches, possible applications, advantages and technical challenges were discussed. Evolutions of surgical robotics and future trends were analyzed. It can be found that, the major difficulties in the field of surgical robots may not be properly addressed by only using conventional approaches. As an alternative, bio-inspired methods or materials may shed light on new innovations. While endeavors to deal with existing strategies still need to be made, attentions should be paid to also borrow ideas from nature.

Advancement of human leukocyte antigen-partially matched related hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Xiaodong Mo, Xiaojun Huang

Frontiers of Medicine 2013, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 306-315 doi: 10.1007/s11684-013-0279-x

Abstract:

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is one of the most effective options for hematological malignancies, and human leukocyte antigen-partially matched related donors (PMRDs) are a valuable option for HSCT. Several protocols (with or without ex vivo T-cell depletion (TCD)) have been established worldwide. TCD including CD34+positive selection and CD3/CD19 depletion has successfully overcome the human leukocyte antigen disparity. However, TCD is associated with prolonged immune deficiencies, increased risks of infectious complications, and high transplantation-related mortality. PMRD HSCT without ex vivo TCD is well developed, and numerous patients have benefitted from it. Here, we review the literature on PMRD HSCT.

Advancement in genetic variants conferring obesity susceptibility from genome-wide association studies

Tao Wang,Weiping Jia,Cheng Hu

Frontiers of Medicine 2015, Volume 9, Issue 2,   Pages 146-161 doi: 10.1007/s11684-014-0373-8

Abstract:

Obesity prevalence has increased in recent years. Lifestyle change fuels obesity, but genetic factors cause more than 50% of average variations in obesity. The advent of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) has hastened the progress of polygenic obesity research. As of this writing, more than 73 obesity susceptibility loci have been identified in ethnic groups through GWAS. The identified loci explain only 2% to 4% of obesity heritability, thereby indicating that a large proportion of loci remain undiscovered. Thus, the next step is to identify and confirm novel loci, which may exhibit smaller effects and lower allele frequencies than established loci. However, achieving these tasks has been difficult for researchers. GWAS help researchers discover the causal loci. Moreover, numerous biological studies have been performed on the polygenic effects on obesity, such as studies on fat mass- and obesity-associated gene (FTO), but the role of these polygenic effects in the mechanism of obesity remains unclear. Thus, obesity-causing variations should be identified, and insights into the biology of polygenic effects on obesity are needed.

Development of a BIM-based production planning and control system for Lean Construction through advancement

Christoph Paul SCHIMANSKI, Gabriele PASETTI MONIZZA, Carmen MARCHER, Dominik T. MATT

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2021, Volume 8, Issue 3,   Pages 429-441 doi: 10.1007/s42524-020-0105-5

Abstract: As part of general construction management, production planning and control is vital for successful project delivery. Numerous approaches supporting production planning and control exist in practice and research. However, the different approaches focus on distinct areas such as workflow stabilization or cost control, and no single system combines all the requirements of a holistic production management system. Varying production management systems can be explained by the unique characteristics of many construction projects. As an approach for the digital twinning in the construction industry, building information modeling (BIM) can help standardize production management through shifting the management system design toward the digital prototype. Previous scientific work has acknowledged this approach, thereby generating numerous concepts for using building information models within construction management approaches. However, BIM is often merely used as a parallel support rather than as an integral part of production management systems. To address this gap and in terms of research methodology, we follow a Design Science Research approach. Thus, we propose a new BIM-based production management system, which is characterized by a theoretical integration model for BIM and existing construction management techniques, and a methodology for applying these concepts in practice.
